Hardware requirements
- IBM PC/XT/AT or compatible with at least one floppy drive,
- Graphics display card (Hercules, CGA, EGA, VGA),
- DOS 2.0 or higher.
Introduction
Russian English On-Line Dictionary gives you an instantaneous access
to more than 15,000 Russian words once it is installed in your computer
RAM. It is very flexible and easy to use. It will work with almost
any wordprocessor, spreadsheet, data base or any other application.
It will coexist with most of other memory-resident programs as well.
Russian English On-Line Dictionary is a memory-resident program which
means that it needs to be installed in your computer memory every time
you turn on your computer. After that the Dictionary is always there
in the background, ready to be used no matter what is your computer busy
with (as long as it is on). Just press the "hot" keys combination and
the Dictionary pops up to the screen. Press Escape key and you are back
to your application or DOS prompt.
This Dictionary package contains the following files:
- CRUSENG.COM, ERUSENG.COM, VRUSENG.COM, and HRUSENG.COM
files are executable memory-resident programs, for CGA, EGA,
VGA and Hercules display cards respectively.
- RUSENG.BAT automatically loads appropriate program for the
active display card.
- RUSENG.DOC (this file) is an ASCII file describing how to use
On-Line Dictionary.
- DISTEST.COM is used by the RUSENG.BAT program to determine the
display card type of your computer.
- RUS-ENG.DIC is the Dictionary Data file.
- There is also INVOICE.DOC file for those of you who need an
invoice in order to register.
- README.BAT can be used to read more conveniently the RUSENG.DOC
(this file).
- BROWSE.COM is used by README.BAT
Installation
By installation I mean here making the Dictionary memory-resident.
It needs to be done every time you turn on your computer. You can
automate this installation operation when you convince yourself that
the Dictionary works as it should and you want to keep it.
To install the Dictionary, make sure that all Dictionary files are
in your current directory and type RUSENG at DOS prompt, then press
Enter. For example, if you copied all the Dictionary files to your
hard disk subdirectory C:\DOCS, you would type:
C: <Enter>
CD\DOCS <Enter>
RUSENG <Enter>
The Dictionary setup and options will appear on the screen.
Most of the times you would just press the Enter key again and this
would complete the installation of the Dictionary in your computer
memory. However, the very first time you use the Dictionary you need
to tell it where (in what subdirectory) you are keeping the Dictionary
data file. You do this by specifying the full pathname. The default
pathname is A:\RUS-ENG.DIC and, if you don't have a hard disk or you
just don't want to use it, you don't need to change anything. (If
the file RUS-ENG.DIC resides on disk in drive B you need to change
the pathname to B:\RUS-ENG.DIC). If, on the other hand, you copied
all the files to a hard disk subdirectory, say as in the above example,
C:\DOCS you would need to change the default setup.
To change setup, press Tab key once (the highlight on the screen will
move) and then press Enter. The current path to the Dictionary Data
file will be highlighted now. You can press Tab key now to leave it
as it is or press Enter and you will be prompted for a new pathname.
You must type the full pathname, e.g., C:\DOCS\RUS-ENG.DIC and then
press Enter. If you made a mistake or changed your mind while typing
the new pathname (but before pressing Enter) and want to keep the old
pathname just press ESC to cancel and highlight the next setup item.
The next item you may change is the "hot" key (key combination that
you press simultaneously) to activate Dictionary after it has been
installed. Again, you press Tab key to leave it as it is or press
Enter to select other hot key combinations.
After going through all the set-up options you will be asked to press
Enter if you want to save the changed setup to disk file or to press
Esc to keep the changed setup in computer memory only. In any case,
you can always change the setup again as many times as you wish. For
example, if at any time after installing the Dictionary you decide
that you would rather have different settings, make sure that all
Dictionary files are in the current directory, type RUSENG at DOS
prompt and press Enter. The Dictionary setup screen will appear
again allowing you to make changes in the same way as described
above.
You can also type RUSENG A to skip the setup screen. For example,
adding the following two lines
CD\DOCS
RUSENG A
to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file will completely automate the installation
procedure. Of course, you need to substitute DOCS with the name of
the subdirectory that contains the Dictionary files.
Looking up a word
Any time after installation, when the "hot" key combination is
pressed, the Dictionary program comes to the screen and waits for
the user to type in a word to look up. You type in the word using
keys shown on the screen and press Enter. Use backspace key to
delete one character at a time if you have made a mistake while
typing.
After pressing the Enter key the Dictionary will start searching
for the word you typed and after a brief period will show it in the
top row of the dictionary page along with its English rendition.
If the word you typed is not in a dictionary, the closest match
to your word will appear along with its English translation.
In addition, the screen will show Dictionary entries which
alphabetically follow the word you typed. Just like in a "regular"
dictionary you can "browse" the dictionary by using UP or DOWN
cursor keys.
To get on-line help, press F1 key. Help contains information on
Dictionary usage, and explanation of abbreviations and symbols used
in the Dictionary.
Press Esc to leave Dictionary and return to whatever you have been doing
before calling it.
Abbreviations
In "regular" dictionaries abbreviations are usually printed in a
different typeface to help to distinguish them from the rest of the
text. In our case we distinguish them by the dot at the end of every
abbreviation.
In general, the layout of the Dictionary follows the layout of
hard-copy dictionaries. However, to save space, abbreviations for
self-evident cases are omitted. Thus, nouns and verbs are usually
not preceded with any abbreviation (n. or v.). We know that the
Russian word is a verb if the English rendition starts with a to;
otherwise it is a noun. All other cases are always preceded with an
appropriate designation. Unless indicated otherwise, it may be
assumed that the verb listed has an imperfective aspect. Gender is
indicated for irregular nouns only or to avoid confusion. Thus, the
designation f.& m. means that the noun gender depends on the gender
of the person it refers to. Also, in some cases, nouns and verbs are
explicitly designated as such to avoid confusion.

Personal Dictionary Manager
General
Pressing F2 from the main Dictionary screen (Fig. 2) brings you to
the Personal Dictionary Manager screen (Fig. 3). Here you can create
your own Dictionary files, add new records to these files or
search them for records you have added earlier. The program will not
let you to add records to the main Dictionary file or search it while
in the Personal Dictionary screen.
Dictionary selected.
The file which will be searched or which will have a record added to
is shown in inverse video. This is the dictionary selected. You can
instantly select one of the two files shown by pressing F5 or F6
function keys. You can also replace either one of the two files shown
with a new one by pressing F7 and then typing new file name. If you
change your mind and decide to return to the old selection, just
press ESC before pressing Enter and the old file name will reappear,
(pressing Enter with no characters typed in will do the same). The
name of the file you chose does not have to be a name of an existing
file. In fact, the very first time you start the Personal Dictionary
Manager you will not have any Personal Dictionary files. You will be
given an option to create a file when trying to add a record to such
non existing file. However the names you give still have to be valid
DOS file names. Again we recommend typing full path name, that is
drive, directory and the name itself; for example, c:\docs\mydict.001.
You can also select your personal dictionary files from the
installation screen (Fig. 1) following the same customization
procedure as described in changing the main Dictionary location.
Searching and Adding.
The two basic modes of operation of the Manager are SEARCH mode and
ADD mode. Pressing F9 key puts the Manager into SEARCH mode while F10
switches it into ADD mode. The prompt (short underline) shows which
mode the Manager currently is in. In SEARCH mode the prompt and the
characters you type appear in the same row and following the Search:
sign, whereas in ADD mode the prompt and the characters you type
appear in the row below the Add: sign
Searching
SEARCH mode functions pretty much the same way the main Dictionary
does. You type the string to search for and press Enter. The manager
starts searching the file selected and displays Searching ... sign.
After a while, if the search is successful, it displays Found sign
and in the row below what it has found and then waits for your
keystroke. You can now either type another string to search for,
switch to a different file and search again for the same string
without retyping it, switch to ADDING, or escape back to the Main
Dictionary.
Adding
Adding is similar to searching except that in ADD mode you type the
whole record rather than just the search string. The record usually
consists of two strings: 1. the keystring, this is the string which
you or someone else will presumably search for later; 2. the explanation
string or the text which follows the keystring. The keystring can be
any combination of characters (English or Russian) up to 31
characters long. The explanation string can also contain any
characters and any length from zero to 45 characters.
In ADD mode you start with typing the keystring first. After typing in
the string (one or more characters) press Enter to mark the end of
the keystring. The cursor will move several spaces to the right and
appear under the Translate a: sign. Type the explanation string now
and press Enter at the end of it. The program will start adding
process and you will see Adding ... sign displayed in the place where
before was the Add: sign. If ADD is successful the program will display
Adding done message and will wait for your keystroke. Again, you can
now type another record to add, switch to searching, and so on.
If adding is unsuccessful the program will display an explanatory
message and will wait for your action. For example, If you select a
file which does not exist the program will display the following:
XXX.YYY File not found, create it? Y/N, where XXX.YYY is the name of
the file you have selected. You should answer Y (Yes) if you want to
start a new file. You should answer N (No) if you believe that the
file does exist and then press F7 and retype the selection to make
sure the correct and full pathname is specified.

Technical Notes
Windows users
The Dictionary will work fine with Windows in a full screen DOS window.
DO NOT load the Dictionary before loading Windows. The proper procedure
is to start Windows first and then install the Dictionary as a DOS
application.
WordPerfect Russian Module
The VRUSENG.COM and ERUSENG.COM programs will NOT preserve the Cyrillic
font of the WordPerfect Russian module. If you invoke the Dictionary
while in WordPerfect and with the mixed Latin and Cyrillic characters
displayed on screen, they will NOT be displayed when you escape back
to your document from the Dictionary. The document itself will not
be affected or damaged in any way. In fact, you can restore the proper
display of the characters by doing Shift-F1,2,1,5 (Setup, Display,
Color/Fonts/Attributes, 512 characters).
You can get from me a module which DOES preserve the WordPerfect
Russian module font.
Graphics screens
The VRUSENG.COM and ERUSENG.COM programs will NOT pop up from within
a graphics screen. CRUSENG.COM and HRUSENG.COM will, but only if the
graphics is 640x200 (CRUSENG.COM) or 748x350 (HRUSENG.COM).
You can get from me a module which will pop up in any mode, graphics
or text.
